As the full complement of college football games was about to commence, picturesque Columbus, Ohio, was the center of the gridiron universe this weekend with the top-ranked Texas Longhorns arriving to attempt to spoil the Buckeyes’ national championship ring celebration. This backdrop should have been sufficient of a lead-in for any pregame television program, but that was not the case.

No, all eyes along the periphery of Ohio Stadium were gazed at a dungeonable character to make his presence known, woefully under-dressed compared to his broadcast colleagues and displaying a jejune comportment. In essence, the gregarious host took the opportunity to remind the fans that it had been a while since Ohio State had beaten Michigan with an acerbic message on his maize and blue shirt.

The apparent diminution of standards in broadcasting, including sports, is another indication of how executives have elected to sacrifice protocol in favor of a perceived increase in ratings and social media mentions. Nonetheless, the malapert rogue’s risible commentary was sentient with his prognostication of the Buckeyes being victorious in the day’s battle of the collegiate titans. It is unfortunate to witness the once prestigious quality of broadcasting being reduced to a loosely controlled display of buffoonery.

While the Texas Longhorns at Ohio State Buckeyes did not light up the scoreboard, football’s equivalent of blood and thunder this serotinal afternoon proved how physically competitive the game was throughout. It was quite evident that neither team was in midseason form, but they competed arduously without devolving into a series of cheap shots. Nonetheless, the Buckeyes and Longhorns will continue to pay close attention to Penn State, Georgia, and Clemson until their respective teams get into game shape.
